DV AVI resolution... HELP

My Sony cam records in MPEG2... in order to edit in MM I have to convert to
DV AVI... my question is this...

The MPEG2 is 704x480 (4:3 Actual, 16:9 Displayed)
When using NeroVisionExpress to convert to AVI the resolution for AVI is
740x480 not 704... whats the deal? Obviously if I stretch 704 to 740 there is
a quality loss...

I've done some research on resolutions and it seems that 704 and 740 are
both DVD compatible.. so which is better, more widely used, etc etc... ?

grRRr.. why cant there just be one friggin standard!?
Thanks in advance...

What I'm doing from the Sony mini-discs with the 704x480 MPEG-2 files is
resizing them to 720x480 as part of the conversion process. See my Importing
Source Files > Video > Discs page at www.papajohn.org for more info about my
conversion process.

Ok, so I downloaded Vdub... and I figured out how to add the resixe filter
and set it to 720x480... that works perfect. Thank you...

However, I have yet another problem... On the Sony cam I record in 16:9 and
none of the video players or editors I use (MM, Nero, Vdub) recognize that
it's supposed to be 16:9, they all play and or export in 4:3... it looks like
crap because it's all smashed up to fit in the frame (i.e. people look very
skinny)...

Does VDub have a aspect ratio option? I need to be able to force this file
to be recognized as 16:9...
TIA

All DV-AVI files are 720x480, those that have the regular aspect ratio of
4:3 and the widescreen ones of 16:9

Many players/viewers look at a tag in the file telling it that it's one or
the other and shows it that way regardless of pixel dimensions. Movie Maker
has a choice in the Settings.. change it to 16:9 and it'll work with and
save it that way. VDub shows you the actual pixels, as it's an editing
utility, not a viewer.

Does VDub allow for changing pixel size? .9 to 1.2 right?
I really would feel more comfortable if all the editors/viewers showed the
content as 16:9 through all the processes it's taking me to get to the final
DVD outcome...

Pixels are squares on computer monitors... they can be tiny or large and of
any size.... but you can't change their shape.
