I can run PM from the the installation cd but the main partition
containing the operating system no longer has a label just the type
"extended". Also I cannot choose any options other than "info" or
"resize/move" from the menu when I right click on that partition. As
you say, something is scrambled but I wish I knew where?

If the primary partition is now an extended one, it will never boot. It
might be worth running the recovery console and trying the fixmbr
command, check this link:

If that doesn't cure it, I think you'll have to bite the bullet and
install from scratch.
