Using Sony Handycam with Movie Maker

I only tested this on a few of my movies that I made with my Sony Handycam
camcorder, but after I discovered this workaround for MPEG files, I've had no
problems editing my movies using the Movie Maker.

Like so many other people I've seen, the MPEG files lock up Movie Maker.
I've seen with the included software that came with Sony, if you play the
movie and select the "convert" button it says it will convert the audio to
MPEG audio instead of what it was originally recorded in. It will also resave
the file for you as a different file name (so you can keep the original). I
tried this new file in Movie Maker (still encoded as an MPEG) and it works
just fine without any lock ups or anything. I tried resaving it after I made
my changes as a Windows Media file and the file looked and sounded like the
original.

Like I said, I only tested this on a few files, but converting the audio to
MPEG audio seemed to do the trick.
