the other computer (xp sp1) lost its ability to access the internet. The
wizard would not allow me to select dial up, it is highlighted broadband. I
was not able to get any solution to this problem.

before hitting "format C", i installed SP2. Sp2 allows me to attempt a dial
up, but now I get a blue screen, "BAD_POOL_CALLER" and then it does the
memory dump thing, etc.

This may or may not have been the aftermath of being stung by the
"proxy-agent.g" trojan horse that made its appearance coincident to the
start of my problems.

The other computer belongs to my wife. When momma ain't happy, ain't nobody
happy. help restore happiness to persia.

TIA

chuck

Not having SP2 installed with it's security updates may have been the reason
you got infected. Without knowing if or how you practice safe computing it's
hard to say. In any case installing SP2 on an already compromised system may
have made the problem worse. The error message you got can also be caused by
incompatible hardware or drivers. Some hardware and drivers may need to be
updated before installing SP2. At this point your quickest and easiest
solution may be a clean install. It depends on how much data you will lose
and how important it is to you. I would go to this site and read about
installing SP2 before proceeding further.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

When installing windows do not connect to the internet before either SP2 is
installed or a firewall is installed. Even connecting to download windows
updates or activate windows you may be infected.
