XP locks up on logo page following microsoft download

Please help, I downloaded the Microsoft Antispyware program from their
website and when I went to run it, the pc locked up. On reboot it goes
through to the XP logo screen but stops with just the logo on it and
no user names. Therefore, I’m unable to get into windows to try and
restore back to before Friday.
I’ve tried all the options behind the ’F8’ key, but they all end up at
the same point. I’ve checked the BIOS settings and they appear okay
and I’ve tried ’Esc’ & ’Ctrl,Alt,Delete’ at the screen to see if
something is behind it awaiting an instruction, but again all to no
avail.
I haven’t got the original XP @home disk, only a ’Mesh’ recovery disk,
that again doesn’t respond on the screen although the drive is
running.
I’m getting desperate now as my daughter is in the middle of her
A-levels revision/exams and needs to access it.
I wouldn’t mind if it was a dodgy site i downloaded from, but I
expected everything to okay from Microsoft!!
Any ideas, please!!
