I have started to get the following message coming up when my machine is
booting up:

Control Service. The requested control is not valid for this service.

Has anybody else experienced this?
I am using a Notepad with WXP Pro SP2
Thanks for any replies or suggestions.

Click start/run, type msconfig and click ok. Go to the services tab. Check
the box to hide all MS services. Uncheck the remaining ones. Click apply ok
and reboot. Does it still happen? If not, recheck half of the services and
repeat. See if you can determine which is causing the error, then post back
with the name of that service. If it still happens, we will need to look at
the MS services, don't disable any of them without posting back first.

Here is a tool from SysInternals that may help you get an insight on what's running.
Autoruns (checks & shows what's set to auto-load at Windows startup)
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/autoruns.shtml

I've not heard of "Control Service". See if Autoruns can help you pin down unusual entries in your startups.

Your computer may have been shut down accidently, and a or more component or
service occur error.
You could find out the path of component or service that have mistakes and
fix them. The worst way to resovle is reinstall you OS.
