My desktop is, for some reason, displaying an explorer bar on the left hand
side like a regular file folder. It appears as a blue strip and lists "Folder
Tasks", "Other places" and "Details". I can't get rid of it. Also all the
items on the desktop are locked down. I have to cut and paste a folder in
order to move it.

I have McAfee and Spybot up to date and SP2 installed. This problem occured
after I rebooted.

Hi,

Happens sometimes, you will find a fix for it here:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_commtask_desktop.htm

As to the other problem, see if the above fixes it. If not, right click the
desktop and look under "align icons by", see if "lock web items" is enabled.
Click on it to disable it.
