I am having the exact same problem. I could not find any answeres on
Symantec's web site and I was unable to find any instructions on how to
contact them other than through their paid support site. Symantec
obviously does not wish to be troubled with support issues from the
users of their products unless they are willing to pay extra for it.
If anyone has found any way to resolve this issue please post a link or
reply here. Thanks.

Do like Sharon said earlier. Right click your recycle bin and select
"Empty Norton Protected Files". If that does not correct it, there may
still be some large files in the Norton Protected Recycle Bin that are
being missed. Go to the root directory of the drive where the backup
images were being stored. Make sure that you have the folder options
set to show hidden files and folders. Go into the recycler folder for
that drive and look for the large files that you thought you deleted
earlier and manually delete them. You may have to temporarily turn off
the Norton protection, I don't remember if I had to or not. Anyway,
that is what turned out to be the problem in my case with the missing
free space.
