Logging on to Windows XP and e-mails unread displayed
The unread e-mail notification is displayed when I log on to Windows XP, but
there are no unread e-mails in hotmail/Outlook, anywhere? What is the cause
and how do I remove the unread e-mail notification

Overview of the Mail Notification Display on the Windows XP Welcome
Screen
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=304148
Turn off Email Notification
Navigate to:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Youremailaddress]]
Name: MessageCount
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: (0 = disable, 1 = enable)
Download TweakUI
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
This is a section in TweakUI to fix Unread Mail at the welcome screen.
