when i boot up my computer and i see my windows desktop for the first time,
there are no desktop icons or a start menu/bar at the bottom ofmy page. the
only window that comes up is MY COMPUTER. i am not able o right click on my
desktop or make any changes to its appearance. all programs work, however, i
just have to access them through the MY COMPUTER window. and if i "x" out of
that window i have no way of returning to it. my only option is to shut it
down. what happened???

That is definitely not normal windows behaviour. Unless you have enabled
the "Hide the taskbar" option. Hover your mouse at the far bottom of your
screen and if the taskbar doesn't appear, scan for nasties immediately.
