Hi,

My monitor has thin grey lines going thru everything, what would cause this
and how do I fix this problem. This just started this morning.

Thanks

Leslie

Hi, Leslie. The usual way to troubleshoot display problems (with all
t-shooting, make one change and then test before going onto the next
thing):

1. Update your video drivers. Get drivers from the device mftr.'s
website OR if you have an OEM machine (Compaq, Dell, HP, etc.) from the
OEM's website for your specific model computer.

2. Attach the computer to a different monitor. If the problem is gone,
then you know there is a problem with the original monitor. Or attach a
different computer to the monitor and if you get the lines, you know
it's the monitor.

3. If the problem goes with the computer when it is attached to a
different monitor, you know the video card is failing. T-shoot by
swapping out the card for a known-working one.

Hardware t-shooting usually requires that you have extra hardware on
hand for testing purposes. If you don't have this, take your machine to
a friend's house or to a professional computer repair shop (not your
local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).

I had similar problems as you've been having recently !

Find the ' Degauss ' button on the monitor and click it, then restart
computer. If this doesn't help, try to reinstall the video card drivers -
this should probably help if your monitor or card isn't damaged as Malke said.

Interesting, "Leslie" seems to have an inordinate number of diverse problems
spread thru the various win xp newsgroups.
If all the problems are occurring on one system, a sledge hammer might be
the quickest solution.

Are the thin grey lines vertical or horizontal? Is the monitor plugged in
properly to the video card?
Are ther any other symptoms that might point to software?
Hardware possible causes
Monitor & Video card
Loose connections between the monitor and computer.
Failing Video card (Bad card, card seating, etc.
Ripple in PC or monitor power supply.

It could be a bad display cable from the monitor to the pc, usually goes
bad on the plug to pc. I have a year old monitor in my basement that did
this, two days after warranty...figures. Got grey lines and off colors.
Did you try to move the display cable around a bit and see if it
affects it at all? Unfortunately my monitor's display cable is a solder
cable and not unpluggable or replacable.
