I have the exact same problem with my Pioneer DVD -RW DVR-K12D on my
Toshiba Laptop. It used to work fine, until I installed an external DVD
writer (I think this was the mistake) after installing this external DVD
writer my internal one, only worked once more. After that I am
desperetaly trying to find the solution to this problem. I think I will
reboot in the end. Does anybody have a less dastric solution, (if
reformatting is the overall solution in the end??).

OK, looks like a common problem. My older Pioneer 115 as well as some
generic DVD-Rom that came with the computer have the same problem. I
use it as a CD ROM everyday but they both refuse to acknowledge DVDs.
This problem started when I upgraded from 98 to XP.
