I have the same problem with my internal DVD-RW (Pioneer DVR-12KD) on a
Toshiba Satellite notebook. I can't read DVDs, I don't even get an
error message it just thinks its an empty CD. I have this problem ever
since I installed an external DVD Writer (SONY) via USB on my laptop.
After this my DVD only worked once more. After that it has been dead.
Does anybody know a solution? I don't want to reformat I'm not even
sure that that will work, after reading all that i have read. I can't
even reformat with the original disk because my laptop does not read
DVDs and backup is on a DVD.

Thanxs

Try this (it worked for me):

Under Win2K:
Go to Device Manager
Open Primary IDE Controller
Go to Advanced Settings tab
If Transfer Mode is PIO Only, change it to DMA if Available
Do the same for Secondary IDE Controller
(You may have to reboot)

Under WinXP:
not sure exactly but should be something similar to above
(perhaps someone else can find out exactly and reply to this post with
specifics)

Good Luck!
