I just got my first USB HD enclosure. I have a 200 gig IDE Seagate HD
(primary NTFS) and put it in a 2.0 USB enclosure. After plugging in the
USB cable and power cable to the enclosure, I turn on the HD. Usually
it shows up in about 15 sec and all is well.

If I turn off the HD then it disappears from My Computer, if I turn
it back on then it usually reappears. If I do this a few times, it
gets where it won't show up no matter what I do, unplugging USB cable,
power on and off, etc. I get an errror message "USB device
malfunctioned"

If I do the same procedure using an 80 gig HD (primary NTFS). No
matter how many times I turn it off and on, it shows up fine. Yet with
the 200 gig HD, sometimes even if I leave it plugged in and boot up,
it doesn't show up and may have the error message. I've also tried all
this in my Athlon XP1600, same results for both HD's.

I'm using XP SP1 (no automatic updates), a new Athlon64 with 8 USB
ports and a Gigabyte motherboard. I've tried different ports with the
same results. I even used Seagate Tools DOS to test the dirve (quick
test), zeroed out the first sectors and reformatted the Seagate HD in
XP as primary NTFS. Even blank, I get the same results. The jumper
settings on both drives are Primary not slave

Am I running into a 137 gig limit problem or are Seagate HD's quirky?
Or is USB quirky? Or what?

I'm baffled. Any suggestions?

It could be something as simple as an incompatibility between the enclosure
interface, the hard drive and the computer. Connect the drive directly to
your M/B. Does it work now? If so, try the drive in a different
manufacturers enclosure. Get a name brand enclosure. Read the hardware
reviews for the enclosure. Contact the manufacturer.
