Boot Disk Failure & Norton Ghost

Strange problem; if I have my Norton Ghost CD in my Emprex DVD-RW drive
my computer will boot normally (!). If the CD is not in the drive I
get the 'boot disk failure, insert system disk and press enter'?

This all began when I was writing to a DVD-RW using Pinnacle Instant
CD/DVD. The process 'hung' and I had to reset the machine (crash out
of windows) to get out. I then got a message saying the master boot
record was missing/faulty? I used Norton Ghost to restore the MBR.
Still had the boot disk error. Tried repairing WinXP Pro. Able to
boot into windows during course of repair but error returned on
completion.

It was by coincidence that I discovered I was able to boot up if the
Norton Ghost CD was in the drive. I'm stumped - suggestions please? :)
