4 CD-Changer

Hello All,

My friend gave me his old Windows 95 computer and there wasn't anything I
thought I could use (or even looked salvageable) except for this Nex CDR-251
4 CD-Changer. However, once I put it in my Windows XP Pro computer, it
detects it but not as a "4 CD-Changer." On the Windows 95 system it detected
it as 4 sperate Removable Storage Devices (if I remember correctly). I've
Googled this issue before and have only found drivers for Windows 95 and DOS
(and other forums with same question and no answers). Any help would be
appreciated.

Thanks

I should think you will require a dedicated driver for the device. It is
unlikely that WINXP will have a native driver for this rather special
machine.

I would have thought that there would be a support program for a device of
this kind which you are unlikely to get..

There is no way that NEC would continue to give full support to a 1X speed
CD drive, even though it has the capability to handle 4 CDs at one time..

Addison, Lady Luck may be with you.
Apparently, the site below has an XP driver for your strange piece of
hardware. It is dated June 17, 2003.
I am not familiar with this site, but it seems OK:
http://www.cdrom-drivers.com/companies/716.htm?acd=3&rvd=5&thx=9&bng=7&o=5
Google is your friend.

I have been to that exact same site and have tried to download that driver.
However, the link is dead and it gives some URL that does not exist. I have
tried all of those other drivers as well with fail. Oh well, I'm not
surprised NEC doesn't support it anymore, but how come they would stop
producing any kind of CD/DVD Changer? I wan't familiar with computers back
then but did the changer just not catch on, or some thing else?
Thanks for the help

I have to say your guess would be better than mine as to why this device was
discontinued. In all likelihood, it either sold poorly or had quality
problems.

With the availability of Virtual CD software and large hard drives there
isn't much call for PC installable CD-changers. You notice car
manufacturers aren't putting tape decks in cars anymore either.
