There is a button that clears the "most recent programs" list that appear
at the left side of the start menu. When a new user is created, the programs
that are listed here are; MSN Explorer, Windows media player, Windows movie
maker, Tour windows xp, File & Settings Transfer wizard. There is also a box
that determine how many programs can be displayed..
WHERE is this info stored on the hd. Can I minipulated this list by placing
shortcuts in a particular folder?

No. They are not objects at all. They are the original thing. It is designed to STOP you putting things there.

Drag a document there. Change the name of the entry on Start. Notice you are actually changing the name of the original item you dragged there.

Quick Launch, the original Start Menu (ie the top menu), the desktop were all designed for the user's use. But setup programs splat themselves everywhere making it hard for users to find everything (you know one should not have an uninstall entry in Start Menu). So MS made it hard to add to it.

Try C:\Documents and Settings\<My Name is here>\Recent

Drag your shortcuts into it.
