XP Pro+SP1+Updates - can only shutdown, not logon fr. Welcom scree

Every so often, ever since I applied the latest security updates to my SP1 XP
Pro system, I get a semi-hang at the wlecome screen. Mousing over userids
will let the box for the password display, but the cursor remains the
pointing hand, instead of the flashing vertical bar that would permit
password entry. Shutdown or restart clears the problem. This most frequestnly
seems to happen after logging of my 'net surfing cripple-id, after clearing
all cookies, temporary file, and history from IE, then using start->logoff.
SP2 isn't an option, because of the firewire performance degradation it can
cause. Virus scans show no infection. Searches of virus databases show no
similar symptoms. All userids have password protection. (Turning off password
protection isn't an option.) Internet connection is deliberately removed
during logons/logoffs, & only plugged back in afterwards. Does not happen
every time, but about 30% of the time. Hasn't happened yet with fast user
switching, just logoff. (But I rarely use fast switching.) Usually have only
the one userid logged on at the time (just as a matter of paranoia.)

Any thoughts on additional info to gather, to help set up a reproducible
scenario?
