I have a HD that come from a machine with bad mobo, It has win98 on it
plus a lot of other things. I wont yo put it in my Xp SP2 sys. and use
as back up drive. I wont to remove os from it[win98]. any problem
installing it and formating it to make it a clean hd, on the xp sys as a
secondary drive ?

Change the jumpers on the HD to slave. Then put it in your computer. Then
format and partition it (I would use the floppies from the HD's
manufacturer). Then go to the BIOS to make sure the BIOS recognizes it. If
you don't understand what I just typed, take it to someone who does.

Install it as a slave (set the jumper to slave, check to be
sure the current drive is jumpered as master) and then
connect it to the IDE and power cables.

When you boot the computer, the "new" drive will be detected
and you should be able to browse it to check for any files
you want to save. If there are any such files, copy them to
the other drive (in a new folder) and then you can use disk
management to format the drive as you wish. Just right
click My Computer end select Manage to get started.

You can just delete the W98 system files folder and leave
the old data files. The W98 OS will not boot since you do
not have a dual boot menu setup and thus you can delete
anything on the FAT32 drive. If you want it to be NTFS, you
will have to either convert it or format.

Probably not. Fit it into the case, you may need to change a jumper on the
back of the drive to set it as a slave or master drive if there is already a
drive on that channel (cable). The Bios may need to be set to detect the
drive if it isnt on auto detect now. Once detected reformat the drive.

Your instructions are backward. The drive has to be recognized by the BIOS
before you can work with it. There is no need to use manufacturer floppies
to do any work on it as you can partition and format the drive from Windows.

My way works, although you're right about the BIOs, my bad. I prefer the
floppies. You prefer to jeopardize Windows.

Windows XP has Management console, which includes disk
management. XP can format NTFS. XP is not size limited.
Using floppies to boot the computer DOES make the C: drive
exposed to being altered or the OS being deleted.

Booting Windows on C: protects C: and the OS from changes.

Also, many modern computers don't have a floppy drive
anymore.

The second OS (W98) will be invisible and will not boot
since you have not taken any steps to create a dual boot
system, with a boot menu to offer you the choice. XP
installed on the Master drive will be detected first and
boot. If you setup the hardware so the W98 drive is SLAVE
then the only way W98 would boot would mean that the C:
drive with XP was not detected. That could happen if the
drive failed, the cables or power was disconnected (perhaps
while you were installing the drives.) No harm would be
done to the system. Just check the connections.
