I went to xp sp2 and my Photoshop 4 has been erratic. My
LViewPro has completely stopped running as have other applications
which are related to photos or movies..
But what I have been reading here in the newsgroups is that
there is nothing wrong with the operating system according to some
apologists. Either you and I are liars, or they are. I know I am not
so...

Let's see - you don't answer the Original Poster's question and you
insult anyone who might have wanted to help you. Photoshop is up to,
what 8 or 9 now and you're running version 4? And yet if I say that we
have Photoshop 7 running on numerous XP SP2 boxen I'm a liar?

You're not a liar. I am sure you are having problems. You are running an
antiquated program, don't have your system configured properly and may be
loaded with spyware/malware/virus's.

But you don't want help! You just want to bitch-a-bit!

Yes, I am bitching. For a damn good reason: $$$ I always
thought that usenet was where frustrated go to let off steam.
Ok, I have older software that has worked without a hitch with
Windows 95, Windows 98, ME for years, and for a short while with XP
without any problems - until I upgraded to SP2.
Then suddenly all of my graphics manipulation software expires
somehow; simultaneously, spyware instantly attacks my computer past my
firewalls and anti-virus program, along with virus's - and the only
software I own that is pristine is the saintly XP SP2? That defies
logic.
Why would older software begin to expire like soufflés upon
"upgrading" to SP2? And why doesn't Microsoft warn their customers
that everybody has to dump their more expensive applications and go
out to buy brand new software in order to use their "upgraded"
operating system?
I have a feeling of déjà vu - Microsoft next announces that
they are willing to part with some great new software for big bucks to
replace those pesky old applications that stopped working.

For those who tried to help me, thank you.

MS can care less. It is not their problem. You should be bitching at
Photoshop but since their current version works just fine and you would
rather bitch than upgrade go take a flying leap.

Actually, I would like to see Microsoft go the Apple way. A whole new
operating system, from the ground up. That would mean all NEW applications
that will be written to use the NEW operating system.

Then, and only then, will we be rid of the legacy bull s**t that brings down
a system and the cry babies who are affected by it!

One question, are you sure you want Microsoft manufacturing PC's?

Oh my! Sounds like Windows XP-64 except more drastic. Of course new
operating system as you describe, equals new drivers as well as new apps
which equals no installed base, equals no app sales, equals no operating
system sales. Me thinks that idea of no legacy support is a lead ballon.

I don't proclaim to be an Apple guy but didn't they do it with OSX? Thought
I had read somewhere that no older apps would run natively under the OSX
O/S.

You read the link? In summery, "use compatibility/classic mode", which
has OSX actually loading a copy of OS9 to run the program. Not too
different from what Windows and OS/2 do.
