e have a couple client machines running win xpp service pack2. with office xp
We have policy set fr 10 min ss and password required upon wake.
When the user is away from their desk for a long period of time, then go to
unlock their pc the background is there but the logon dialog box will not
show up. Upon looking at the task manager I have found that the eplorer.exe
process is gone. This does not happen all the time and is pretty much an
intermittent problem.

Start troubleshooting by examining the Event Viewer for clues:
Start>Run eventvwr.msc [enter]

Make sure the computers are malware-free.

An intermittent problem often indicates failing hardware. If the
computers with the issues are older and perhaps have the same hardware
configuration, troubleshoot with that in mind.
