The machine in question is an XP sp2 and out the blue you will hear fart
sounds. I have muted all devices in the sounds properties box. I also
checked the sounds and multimedia properties and found nothing. I also
deleted the temp stuff. I ran spybot and found so spyware. I am not sure
what this sound file is linked to.

Who else has access to your PC? :-) Check for sniggering workmates or
recently installed programs - see Add Remove programs.

Does it sound like stuttering? Search on www.Google.com for stuttering
sounds, if this is the problem then it is either an interrupt
conflict/problem or your video drivers need updating.
Good luck its a hard problem to track down, but your a computer techie, Rich

Do clean-boot troubleshooting. Look in Event Viewer for clues. Use Task
Manager to see what is running when the "farting" occurs.
Clean Boot - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=310353
and How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP -

Start>Run eventvwr.msc [enter]
Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up Task Manager (or right-click on empty area of
taskbar and then left-click on Task Manager).

I don't know what's causing it, but I would suspect some kind of
malware. Spybot Search and Destroy is a good program, no one
program is effective against all malware. You need to use
several. Try running Adaware and maybe others if that doesn't get
it.

Perhaps try a system restore to the date before you ate the beans. Oops I
mean to the date before the farting started

Perhaps some "jokester" has associated that particular sound with one
of the windows events. Go to the control panel, open sounds and audio
devices, click on the sounds tab and check out which sounds are
associated with which events.

You have to admit it's a funny subject line. If you find out how it's
done, please let us know.
