Hi,

I installed MS Antispyware beta1. After I ran it and rebooted the PC, the default web page of IE became msn.com. Why did MS Antispyware hijack the default web page and how can I fix it?

Is AVG antivirus software free? I can only find a 30 day trial version.

You probably opted for Microsoft Anti-Spyware to reset your
IE settings. By default, IE uses MSN as a start page. You can
easily reset it to your own personal favorite, by accessing Tools,
Internet Options from within Internet Explorer.

Yes, AVG Free is a no-cost version. Likely, you clicked into
the normal (for purchase) version. Just look a little closer on the
Grisoft page to locate the free version.

Fire up M$ antispyware, click on "advanced tools" and then "browser restore"
then the link to set url or see if the url you want is in the list...
By the way in my opinion its the best thing that M$ has come up with!!(but
then of course they had to buy the company first"Giant Software") but don't
rely solely on it use lavasoft "adaware" or "spybot search&destroy" as
well....Tdp

There is a difference between setting a homepage and hijcking it. Hijacking
usually refers to changing a homepage which is then stuck there for good
using the common way of changing it. Which you should easily be able to do.
Right-click IE icon on desktop | Properties | General | Home page. Type in
your Homepags address and hit Apply | OK.

Why does Microsoft do this? It happens when you update IE and at other
times. Why? Well because they can. Probably to make sure you get a
cookie.

Probably free for 30 days. I wouldn't use that one. There are Internet
nasties on the Web which use AV Services as a camouflage for their own ends.
Really though AV software is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Gives you a false
sense of security. I don't know of any free AV software reason being the
database of what it can detect must be updated daily and who is going to
spend time doing that for no renumeration? You want AV Software that might
work pay for it. You want AV software that won't work don't.

Hi

After you've run the program you will be shown what, if any spyware, it has
found. There should be an entry for your home page being changed - uncheck
that option so it's not changed.

AVG does have a free version that is not limited by 30 days. I works
alright with a small footprint.

I just took MS Anti-Spyware Beta1 off my system. I ran it for about 2 months, it automatically scanned every morning at 2 am, and always found the same 3 or 4 more benign "threats". Lavasoft's AdAware (mentioned elsewhere in this thread) does a heck of a lot better job. Always finds potential threats every time I run it, maybe once a week. Spybot Search and Destroy is worth having, but doesn't seem to find as many threats as AdAware. The MS application would slow my PC down to a crawl, and in fact cause programs to crash while it was scanning.

Strange. My wife has MS Anti-spyware on her computer and I have it on
mine. Neither of us experience the slow-down of which you speak. Must be
something about the configuration of the program on your computer or
something unique to your own set-up.
