Video files causing program terminations

Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2.
Whenever I use explorer or My computer to list what video files I have in
directories, explorer terminates. I can open the files with media player or
winamp but unless I select from a playlist explorer terminates. This is also
occurring in publisher when trying to insert a photo or image file.
I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers from nVidia, codecs from
Ace Mega CoDecS and media player 10 but it still happens.
Microsoft tells me "Contact Ligos Corporation for support or product
updates." Who the hell are they?? I am not using any Ligos products.
Any ideas??

The crash is usually caused by third-party Codecs.

Click Start, Run and type eventvwr.msc
Select Application entry in the left pane
In the right-pane, look for the Error entry denoted by a Red X

Sort by date and track-down the entry based on what time the error exactly
occurred. Locate and double-click the entry and you'll see more information
in the resulting dialog. Click the copy button at the top and copy the whole
event and paste it to a Notepad document and save it. Post the information
here.

This utility (MMCompView) from Nir Softer helps you disable the Multimedia
Codecs (and later re-enable if needed). Use this tool to disable the
third-party Codecs one at a time, until the crash is not seen.
