i want to reformat my hd but i need to save some programmes as i don`t have a
c.d for some of them. how do i save them onto a disc and then re-install them
back onto my re-formatted h.d regards mark.

Hi

You probably won't be able to backup programs as the files for those could
be scattered all over your PC's hard disk/partition. And also the Registry
will be different on a new install. You will be able, though, to backup
your data files before the new installation.

You can't for most programs. Apart from possibly adding system files they
make additions and changes to the registry. If they are legal programs email
the publisher- many will supply a duplicate disk for nominal cost so long as
you have registered.

For a fresh reinstallation of the programs you need the installer or other
application files from which you installed those. Those are there where you
got the programs, i.e., if you downloaded from any site you have to get from
the site again.

Unless they are very simple programs that don't write any settings to
the registry on installation, you're approach won't work. Programs need
to be installed from the original media or downloaded installation file.

You can't. You'll need to have the original installation media, so you
can reinstall the applications. This is necessary to create the dozens
(perhaps hundreds) of necessary registry entries, and to place the many
necessary files into the appropriate Windows systems folders.

That is one of my biggest complaints about the PC. On a Mac I was able to
remove almost everything that was installed by a program and then restart
the program and it would recreate them. There were a few exceptions such as
background tasks.

It had a folder called preferences which corresponded to the PC registry.
You could delete almost anything and it would be recreated when a program
was rerun. You would loose any settings and registration codes but that was
all.
