where has my 2 GB memory vanished???

hi,

can u make me clear on this HDD size issue, plz.

so when i see the properties of c:, it shows 13.1 GB as used space and
1.50 GB unused. as such i have 15 GB primary partition.

well, when i go and select all the files, including the hidden ones and see
its properties, then it shows 11.2 Gb used.

so where has this 13.1 GB - 11.2 GB = 1.9 Gb vanished?? is there any way to
recover the area that has gone missing.

You have to choose to show both hidden and "system" files to get the true
picture. You are only half way there. (-:

Did you include "System" files in the Explorer View option ?

Here's what maybe behind your missing space. Windows uses
Clusters to save data. Normally, a cluster will be 4-KBytes in size.
When a file doesn't fill a cluster, the remaining space inside of it
isn't used (Slack). You can see this by picking a file (any) and
Right Clicking it, then Left Click properties. You'll see two
description fields, Size & Size on Disk. The size field is the
actual count of KBytes the file is. The second one shows how
many clusters the file takes up on the drive. Likely, your missing
space is consumed by the Slack cluster space.

Hard drive space is *NOT* memory. RAM is memory; hard drive space is hard
drive space.

well,

the solutions are great but to clearify the facts, i have included all the
Hidden files and others when selecting for knowing the file size.

next, as written "You'll see two description fields, Size : Size on Disk.
The size field is the actual count of KBytes the file is. The second one
shows how many clusters the file takes up on the drive." so if that is the
case then this minor clusters wont and will never reach in GB's. is my point
correct. so, hope that there is really something else taking away my space.

can you make some point on this issue, again. pls.

If you have a large hard drive and are using the fat32 file system, you are
wasting (likely) 20-25% of your hard drive. Use the NTFS file system
instead!

There are 3 options in the Explorer View that affect which
folders/files are shown:

- Show Hidden Files & Folders (Checked)
- Hide Extensions for known File Types (Un-Checked)
- Hide Protected Operating System Files (Un-Checked)

Until you have those option fields set, you cannot tally up
disk space with Explorer -

Hide Extensions for known File Types (Un-Checked)

This does not control whether, or not, the file is visible. It only hides
know extensions, the part of the file after the dot (ex: .doc). The file
will still be seen, and counted - NO?

If I set my View to "Hide Protected Operating System" and Explore
the Windows folder and Select All/Right Click to Properties it will
show 1.08 Gigabytes, Size on Disk 1.68 Gigabytes. If I toggle the
view option off, to Not Hide Protected... Then the tally changes to
1.32 Gigabytes, Size on Disk 1.68 Gigabytes. Haven't tested the
Hide Extensions, but will do so. I was assuming the original poster
was using Explorer to tally up their disk content.

as written,

There are 3 options in the Explorer View that affect which
folders/files are shown:

- Show Hidden Files & Folders (Checked)
- Hide Extensions for known File Types (Un-Checked)
- Hide Protected Operating System Files (Un-Checked)

Until you have those option fields set, you cannot tally up
disk space with Explorer -

so, i have done the same thing as said. then also the things shows up like
this.

when seen as properties of c: USED SPACE = 13 GB

when browsed in explorer and seen via selecting all the hidden, system and
other folders as suggested, i get this

SIZE 11.2 GB
SIZE ON DISK 11.1 GB

well, i think that now also there is a vast 2 GB difference. isn't it???
what do you all say.
oh yeah!! i have NTFS as file system for C:
