Scanner Problem

I use a Microtek scanner that I have had for several years. I was using Win
98 and everything worked fine. I now have an up to date version of XP and the
latest driver for the scanner. The scanner works fine but everytime i turn
the pc off I have to re-install the scanner software/driver to use it again.
If I leave the pc running then the problem doesn't occurr. Any suggestions as
to solve this problem would be appreciated. Microtek doesn't have a solution.

I used to have a Microtek scanner and it was very particular about how it
wanted to be shut down and started. You had to power up the scanner, allow
it to do it's initializing thing, then power up the computer. When shutting
down Windows, you had to let Windows fully shut down, then shut off the
scanner. If you did not follow this procedure, the scanner wanted to
constantly install it's software and drivers.

The scanner is controlled by the pc via a usb connector. I cannot switch it
on unless the pc is running.

The scanner does not have it's own power supply?

Yes it does but the pc controls the scanner. There is a seperate on/off power
switch on the rear of the scanner but this will only work when the computer
is running. The scanner powers on and off with the pc.

He already said "Microtek doesn't have a solution" so he has
been in touch with them.

Kevin I think that you have detected the cause of the problem. I do not use
the scanner often. When I do use it I usually disconnect the power when I
have finished. That is, I do not shut the computer down, I use the power
swith on the scanner. To-day, when I had finished scanning, I shut down the
computer before I flicked the power switch on the scanner. I rebooted the pc
and left the scanner un -powered. Several hours later I turned off the pc,
swithed on the scanner power and booted up the pc. Surprise, the scanner
worked OK. You were correct in that the scanner needs to be "closed down" by
Windows before it is turned off. I hope this rambling makes sense to you. I
really appreciate your interest in my problem. Thanks a lot.

The Microtek do have a power supply. There are scanners without a PSU
though- I have a Canon scanner which has no separate power supply, it's
powered from the USB port.
