Thanks for the info, I understand what you’re saying, but my question
remains. Has Uncle Bill and his allies, HP, decided to make it so that
certain software, drivers, won’t load if the copy ain’t legit? I’ve
been working on his PC for two days now and I’m grasping at straws
trying to figure out why some HP printer drivers refuse to load.

There is no way of telling if the pirated version has all the
proper Windows XP files intact. That is why it is essentially
a waste of time attempting to troubleshoot a pirated copy.
My guess is the pirated copy is corrupt. The installation of an authentic,
genuine version of Windows XP will should fix the problem.
