continuous disk writing, multiple dumprep.exe

I'm running Windows XP Pro service pack 2 and have recently started getting a
problem that seems to manifest whenever I try to open / edit image files. At
first I thought it was a dodgy installation of Paintshop, but since
uninstalling this and taking a system restore back several weeks I now find
the same problem even using Paint.
The application opens OK, but as soon as I try to open an image file,
everything slows down and the hard disk writes continuously. In Task Manager
I see several instances of dumprep.exe and stopping these appears to
stabilise the system.
I'm running Norton antivirus but checked it with Panda's online service too
- both say no viruses.
Anyone come across this before or got any ideas?

Is there a way to see a log of the events leading up to the error? Maybe this
would give some pointers on what's causing it.

After Googling I see that dumprep is part of Microsoft error reporting. This
is interesting because error reporting is turned ON but I'm not getting any
notification of errors being sent to Microsoft like I used to.
