Windows Shuts Down At Random

This is NOT a crash...

I am running XP SP2.

Seemingly at random, my computer will power off. When it reboots, it acts as
if nothing had happened. (In other words, no "Windows unexpectedly shut
down"-type messages).

When it reboots, all of my menus are exactly like they were AT THE TIME OF
MY LAST REBOOT. In other words "Recent Documents", etc. (Start Menu AND
inside Office) do not reflect what I was working on since the last reboot.
(Although all saved documents are indeed saved - just not on any Recently
Used menus.)

It happens pretty consistently when I run NAV - but not in the same "place"
in the scan. Ditto for Spyware Blaster. Sometimes when updating AvantGo on
my Palm, but not always. Also in Safe mode with NAV.

Obviously, I don't have enough information to search out what's wrong. But
it's all the information I have. So here's my question:

Is there a file somewhere in Windows that is constantly rewriting as it's
running its processes? So I can take a look each time it shuts down and see
what's going on that's similar?

Or is there some other thing I can do to get better info on my problem? Or,
is there a better forum for this query?

(Here's a stoopid question: Many years ago, I had heat-sync issues. Is it
possible this could be similar? Could NAV be overheating the processor? But,
like, MS-Word doesn't? Does that even make sense?)

OK.... Discuss!

You may want to look in event viewer to see if you can find a clue.

Any advise is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.

Right click your desktop MY COMPUTER icon, then left click PROPERTIES on the resulting
context menu. When the SYSTEM PROPERTIES window opens, click the ADVANCED tab. On that
tab under the heading STARTUP and RECOVERY, click the SETTINGS button. Under the heading
SYSTEM FAILURE, click to REMOVE the checkmark to the left of AUTOMATICALLY RESTART. Click
the OK button at the bottom of that window, and then click the APPLY and OK buttons on the
remaining window. Then reboot. Hopefully instead of rebooting the next time the problem
arises, you will get an error message instead. Post the details of that error message,
and someone should be able to recommend a fix.

As Larry said. However if the Power Supply is failing, it might not be
neccesary with a bigger one, just a new one!!

Hi Robert,

I've once had a problem like that - it sounds like it's a specific
file, that is corrupt. This is indicated by your computer 'rebooting'
when using different kinds of scanners. Likely also at other points,
but not so often. Could be when the file is attempted accessed by the
program which original installed the file.

Remember to backup - trying to recover from this kind of error has
lost my data in the past.

You could try windows error correction (if you already haven't). This
CAN in rare cases corrupt the disk, when it tries to recover a lot of
tracks, it goes on for hours and hours, and eventually finishes, and
most files are no longer valid - so backup first is important.

Try to download the harddisk error checking utility from the vendors
homepage, they can make an extensive scan of your harddisk (but be
warned it can take a long time, my 250 GB maxtor takes about 16
hours!!). In my experience, if there is any sector errors, then get
all your data of the harddisk - it will eventually fail, it may be
days it may be months, but my disks have never lasted years after
that. If you find errors you can make a low level format and then
check the disk again - if it's is ok, I have found it is ok to use
again. But if sector errors reoccour, then have the disk replaced, if
under warrenty, get a new drive from the vendor, otherwise just trash
it, it's not worth the trouble.

It could be other issues too - heat certainly being one of them.

Regards Leif.
