When I use Start > Search > Files or Folders my computer is completely
freezes. The only way to get into restart the computer is to shut down the
power supply. Are there any suggestions to what causes this?

Clean Boot in Windows XP" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310353).
This may come from other software running in the background at the
same time.
