Yep - It's a core functionality of XP. Don't think of the OS as
using "Pure" Physical memory. The internals of XP require a
mix of Physical & Pagefile space to create Virtual Memory.
Even though traffic (Data placement) in the Pagefile will only
be ~40-60 Megabytes it needs to have it present. Some apps
may not work or even initialize without Pagefile capability in
place. (Photoshop is one that depends on the Pagefile). It's a
very contentious topic and you'll likely get a sorts of opinions.
With recent PCs that have 256+ Megabytes Paging isn't such
a major factor in performance as in years past with NT4.0 &
to a degree Windows 2000.

Yes.
Many applications will suffer seriously if you remove you swapfile.
In my humble opinion you should have 1MB more then you have RAM.
In your case 1025MB should do it.
The gain in speed when removing the swapfile is hardly noticeable and
will slow down your system when you open many, i.e. four or more,
windows at the same time.
Keep your swapfile.

Yes. If you don't, you won't be able to use all the RAM you have.
Moreover having it enabled doesn't hurt you in the slightest.

In a word - yes. Exactly how large to set the page file depends on what
programs you run. See this excellent article on virtual memory by the
late Alex Nichol, MVP: http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

Why do you think you wouldn't want to use virtual memory?
