XP freezes when logging out

I'm currently using xp home ediion with 3 users set up with admin rights.
When a user logs out xp freezes just displaying the wallpaper instead of
returning to the welcome screen. I physically have to switch the computer off
then on again to get it working again. Does anybody have a solution to this?
I've scanned for viruses etc. and system seems clean. Does not happen every
single time but frequent enough to cause sufficient hardship.

thanks for the info.
I have disabled the welcome screen as a workaround for now.
