Read this excellent article on virtual memory in XP and how to set it by
the late MVP Alex Nichol: http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

No. Rules of thumb, when you can find them, are usually wrong
anyway.

There's no number that's right for everybody. Even two people
with the same amount of RAM will run different apps, have a
different workload, and therefore need different amounts of page
file.

See http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm by the late MVP Alex Nichol.
There's excellent information on the page file there.

Yes -- let Windows do it. :-)

Seriously -- I went through this when I was a new XP user and this
group guided me to stop monkeying with the settings.
