Existing user receives a new profile

Here's my situation:

Within the past two days I have had the following situation happen to two
different users. The users log on to their accounts as they always have, the
format for which they log on are username: firstname.lastname, password,
domain name. The first user, who already has a profile on the computer, logs
on to the computer and is missing all of her files on the desktop, in my
documents, and favorites, as well as her personal settings. I checked in the
documents and settings folder and discovered that there are now two accounts
for her profile: firstname.lastname (old account) and
firstname.lastname.domainname (new account). She had never had a problem
before. She is using the same computer and the same log on credentials as she
always has, however this time a new profile was created. The next day another
user encounters a similar problem, but the profiles this time are
firstname.lastname (as normal) and another profile named "temp" (which is the
profile that is currently loaded). Does anyone know what would cause this or
why this is occurring? It is like Windows is interpreting the users as being
new users to the computer and creating a new profile. But, with the users
having these computers for months without this happening and using the same
sign on information I don't see how this is possible.
