I am lost here. When I first boot up my computer and open , let's say Word,
Word opens no problem but when I click on open file in Word, and I want to go
to a specific directory, it takes for ever to get to that directory. It
almost seems as if the computer froze but it did'nt. I would say it takes at
least 50 to 60 seconds before it opens the directory. Now, it only does that
for the first time. After that, it's ok
It does the same thing when I use Window's Explorer on the first time after
a boot. If I click on drive D for exemple, and go to music, or any directory,
it takes forever to open that directory. I use WinXP Pro SP2. Now this is a
new problem and I can't figure it out. I really really hate to have to
reformat AGAIN!. It behaves the same in any program that I open. Wierd.
INdexing services is disabled, not running. Do you have any clue as to what
may be causing this? Thanks a bunch.

My guess would be some app that you have set to auto update and it is tying
up your cpu cycles for this period right after boot. Just as an experiment,
after you boot, wait about 3-5 minutes and then open your desired program
and see if the delay still takes place. If not, suspect something running
in the background that is eating cpu time and narrow it down using a
selective startup by unchecking a few items at a time in Msconfig, Start up.
DO NOT uncheck Explorer or Systray......just any app that may be updating,
phoning home, etc. at boot.
Heirloom, old and the simplest machine that
will do the job adequately is best
