One day whilst downloading a file I accidently UNticked a box in the lower
left that said something about don't show this dialog again, now when I
download , it goes straight to downloading to a temporary file. How can I
get the default dialog box back where I have a choice to either open or save
the download?

In Windows Explorer, click the TOOLS menu|FOLDER OPTIONS|FILETYPES

In the list, locate the file type in question and click the ADVANCED button.

Checkmark the "confirm on download" box. Click on OK.
