Folder properties change on their own!

I have a shared folder. Normally it works fine but every few days we get
"Access failed" and when I check the folder isn't shared anymore. If I share
the folder again it works fine for a few more days then the problem comes
back. There are no other users so it's not someone messing about.
I've also noticed that the view setting sometimes change on other folders.
Normally it's fine but then I'll explore a folder I haven't been to for a
few days and I find it's changed to thumbnail view or something else. It's
as if Windows XP can only remember the settings for a limited number of
folders then it forgets the rest.
Anyone seen this?

Hi,
For question #2: WindowsXP will remember the settings of up to 400 folders,
after that it starts forgetting some. See this from MVP Kelly for a way to
increase this number:

Line 2, increase the folder view size limit to 8000
For question #1: There has to be something changing the shares, it doesn't
happen spontaneously. Is this shared across a network, or across user
accounts on the same system?

It seems that way!

It's a folder on an external USB hard drive used to hold backups. One folder
is shared across the network to a allow a second PC to write it's backups to
it. I don't think the user of the other PC (my wife) knows it even exists so
I don't think it's a user problem. I think it might be happening when the
host system or the drive itself is powered up/down but I've been too busy to
check. I'm not using any fancy security profiles or anything like that. I
don't see any other sharing problems.
