computer keeps crashing and I don't know why

This started happening recently. I completely reformed my disk and
reinstaled everything from my disk a while back. Now the computer just shuts
down at any given moment. I first repaired the currently installation then I
reinstalled the windows xp os. I'm using windows xp pro on a Dell Inspirion
5100 laptop. The computer seems to shut down more often when its been on for
a little while and I was told that the inspirions tend to overheat. I
checked the temperature settings and everything appeared okay. Can anyone
give me someway to trouble shoot what may be causing the problem as I have no
clue if its the software or the computer hardware.

Any advise is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.
Has a bad (old) CMOS battery caused such things?

Only battery I know of is for the clock which would
not effect his problem.
..
what is CMOS battery?
Just my 2¢ worth. Larry

There's not enough quoted here for me to know what his problem
is, but the battery is to maintain the information in the
CMOS/BIOS. The clock setting is part of what's maintained, but
not all of it.

Thx Ken. Never heard it called that b4 but I guess
there's gotta be juice to maintain BIOS settings &
possably the BIOS pgm depending on whether they're in
RAM or ROM storage.
Dont see how this coud cause random shutdowns but 1
time this was happening 2 me it was power supply. Good
thing about upgrading is its cheap($20), can be done by
user, never hurts, & might be useable in future PC's
with same type tower. If it is PS, it'll die
eventually.
Comments/suggestions/corrections appreciated.
Thanks- bye- Larry

Anyone that would trust their computer to a $20 power supply deserves any
grief such stupidity would bring.

Agreed about the frugality, however your original post made no mention that
it was a $100 PS.
I once knew a man who owned a very expensive limited edition Mercedes...he
put the cheapest gas and the cheapest tires he could find...I just had to
shake my head every time I saw that beautiful car plodding along on a set of
$90 tires...all that wonderful engineering of the suspension shot to heck.
(Mind you, they were $90 full retail, not on sale. They were warranted to
get the vehicle out of the parking lot or 500 feet, whichever came first).

You're welcome, Larry. Never heard it called CMOS before? CMOS
stands for "Complementary Metallic Oxide Semiconductor" It's the
kind of chip that's used to hold the data.

Seems a misnomer - Complementary means we
didnt pay 4 it! Maybe I'm spending 2 much time in
Vegas :)
BIOS is mostly off my radar because the
documentation of the mobo manufacturer is so poor. For
example, I recently got a game to stop freezing by
enabling AGP fast rights which the documentation says "
turned on to enable and off to disable". Not much
help. I had the use Google to get a good definition.
Your help is MUCH appreciated. Thanks- bye- Larry
