What are your computer's hardware specs? Things you should tell us to
help us focus the troubleshooting:

1. Your processor speed.
2. How much memory (RAM) you have.
3. If you have also done Disk Cleanup and deleted temporary files.
4. How many other users are logged on while you are doing the Fast User
Switching.

OK, the simplest way to find out about your computer is to go to the
System applet in Control Panel. Look on the General tab and you will
see your processor and how much RAM you have. Post back with that
information. Also, were you ever able to switch users successfully? If
yes, what changed?

OK, you have a nice fast machine with plenty of RAM. But this new post
throws a different light on things. When you first posted, it sounded
like you were using Fast User Switching. Hence my subsequent answers to
you. IOW, it sounded like you were already logged onto your account and
then used FUS to just switch to another account rather than logging out
and having the new person log in. In this latest post you seem to be
saying that you are *not* using FUS but that the problem happens when
you log in. Which is it? Are you ever able to log in?

If you are having difficulties in logging in (not using FUS), then can
you get to your account in Safe Mode? What do you have set to run when
you log in? Perhaps whatever it is has failed. Or perhaps your user
account has become corrupted.

Please fill in the blanks for more focused troubleshooting. Remember
that I can't see you and your computer from here, so if I'm asking for
clarification it is because it is important to have an accurate picture
of what is really happening.

i can get onto my account anytime that no one is logged on but the trouble is
when someone else is logged on. i know i haven't said this before but it not
only happens to me but it happens when any one else tries to log onto their
account when someone else is logged on. for some reason the computer is only
allowing one account to be logged on and that is it.

I'm sorry Jay, but it still isn't clear to me if you are using Fast User
Switching or not. If you are, the scenario goes like this:

1. You start the computer and log on. You get into your account just
fine.
2. User2 comes along and wants to do some work. You do *not* log off but
instead choose "Switch User". Then User2 normally would be able to get
her desktop and do work.

If I interpret your posts correctly, you are doing the above and not
able to Switch Users. Your Event Viewer logs may be full. Here is a
link to a very good article explaining the situation with a solution:

Then you need to try and clear the Event Viewer logs.

Start>Run> eventvwr [enter]

You will see three entries: Application, Security, and System. Highlight
each one of them (separately), and then go to Action on the Toolbar and
choose "Clear All Events". You can make the changes to what is being
logged per the link I gave you by choosing Properties from the same
Action button on the Toolbar for each of the three items.

I also have a problem when trying to swtich users with Windows Professional.
This usually happens when I try to close a user, in order to open a different
user (I noticed that I can't open more than two users at once on this pc ...
don't know why). But when I go to close a user by logging off, it says that
it's saving its setting and then stops responding (except for the fact that I
still can move the cusor) - there is no cntrl+Alt+Delete functionality.

I noted that I also suffer from the Windows Shutdown problem where the
system appears to do the same thing as above when saving settings. I also
noted that most of the tech advice to solve this issue for me has also been
done, i.e., I have Service Pack 2 and I also have the latest version of Dell
Bios (A07) for my Precision Workstation (Intel 850 motherboard).

Here's my computer info:
Dell Computer Workstation PWS340 with SCSSI drives
Pentium 4 2.00 Ghz
1Gig Ram.

Is there anything else I can do at this point? Dell thought it was a
powermanagement issue and told me to update the bios. But I did that, and it
didn't solve a darn thing. Is there a fix for this or not? I'm getting
pretty tired of having to shut down the machine manually. It's not a livable
situation when some people lose their data (in having to manually reboot)
whenever we need to swtich users of log off. Very bad scene. Can anyone
offer any good suggestions?
