I tried a clean install of WinXp Sp2 by booting from XP CD on my new
120GB Maxtor internal IDE HD, with a single partition created by the
Setup itself.
The Setup stalls saying, it cannot verify the C:\ drive, it says
system may not have enough memory or some files on the CD could be
corrupted.
I have 512MB memory installed and this CD has been previously used for
installations, without a problem, there is not a single scratch on it.
I continued with the Setup by ignoring this error message, System
installed but with several error messages, for example it said it
could not copy Drivers.cab and some other files later in the
installation process.
After the installation, Windows activated without an issue. System
appeared to run OK, except that some device drivers including some
that have native XP support do not install ( printer etc.) and some
applications do not work complaining about driver installation. (These
applications worked on previous installations.)
I tried correcting the System installation with an in place upgrade, I
received the same error message again as during the initial
installation:
"Setup cannot verify the C:\ drive, system may not have enough memory
or some files on the CD could be corrupted"
I checked the XP CD, Drivers.cab (one of the files that Setup later
reports as being unable to copy), is accessible in every which way, I
could open it, copy it anywhere I wanted.
There has to be something with the HD that Setup has a problem with,
the HD checks fine with every test inside Windows and with command
prompt and even in Partition Magic 8.05.
Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.
