Hi

Is there any way to save the XP sp2 update to disk?

Plan would be, if I needed to, reinstall XP, install XP sp2 from my external
data/backup drive, go to windows update for minimal other updates.

Apologies if this a stupid question.

Thanks for any info.

You can order it from Microsoft for free (including shipping) at:

Yup, you can dowload the whole darn thing. Instead of doing the inplace
update - download the "Network" version. It is a big file [ about 270MB ]
but it can update any WinXP installation no matter what options are
installed or not. Watch the URL wrap:

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals
and Developers

Perfect!

Thanks guys.

I've been lurking a while reading bits and bobs on this group, I've picked
up some excellent tips and fixes. I can honestly say it's one of the most
knowledgeable, friendly and patient. There are some true good guys out
there.

Thank you all.

After downloading SP2, you can then use this program to
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/Autostreamer.shtml to create
a slip-streamed CD of Windows XP with SP2. The instructions for using
AutoStreamer to do this are here
http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/using_autostreamer/using_autostreamer.html.
It's simple to use.

Right. Clean installing Windows XP w SP2 already slipstreamed is the best
way to install Windows XP.
