if you have the quick launch tool bar running (normaly on the task bar) you
can click an icon there which is labeled 'show desktop'
if your quicklaunch toolbar is not there enable it by right clciking the
task bar and chosing the option to enable it in the toolbar section.

Just click the "show desktop" icon in the quick launch bar
or just press the monitor power button to blank the screen
to black.
If you want to get cute, open a spreadsheet or database with
just dummy info, full screen, then minimize it. When you
want to appear to be working, just click its icon in the
taskbar to bring it on top, covering everything else.
