Mail message at log in

I have been seeing the following message at log in for the past few days: "1
Unread Mail Message". The problem is that I have no unread mail in my
mailbox. Can anybody explain this contradiction in reality?
FYI: While I use Outlook for my address book and calendar, I use Eudora Pro
for my email. I have checked both applications, however, and neither "In"
box has any unread mail in it.
Can anybody help sort this out? If so, many thanks in advance.

Hi Paul,
For Passport/Unread Mail Issues:
Go to Start/Run and type in: control userpasswords2. Advanced/Manage
Passwords/Remove.
Tip:
Add Control Userpasswords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Use TweakUI/Logon/Unread Mail and Repair/Unread Mail Count
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
or:
Disable Unread Mail on the Welcome Screen (Line 100)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
To remove an account or to change the count manually Go to:
Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Your
E-Mail Address]. In the right pane modify: Message Count, Change it to 0.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail. In
the right pane modify: MessageExpiryDays Change it to 0.

Kelly,
Many thanks for your tip, but when I followed your instructions and clicked
"Manage Passwords" there was nothing there to remove. Any suggestions? (I
have looked at your other tips which require editing the registry and have to
confess that I'm a little reluctant to get into that on my own. I'm a little
more secure in that universe when I have a tech on the phone to walk through
it with.) All that aside, any idea what could have caused this message to
suddenly appear like this?
Your further thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

You are most welcome, Paul. :o) As per Manage Passwords, that was a
guideline/checkpoint if you are a passport user. Many posters don't
realize that these unread messages can be due to other than Outlook or OE.
As for not wanting to modify the registry, I would suggest your posting to
one of the Outlook groups from here. Good luck and keep us posted. :o)

Thanks again, Kelly, but....the mail message is not associated with Outlook.
As I said earlier, I don't use Outlook for email. The message is definitely
associated with email, however, because when I roll over it with my cursor,
there is a popup that says specifically that there is an unread email message
to my email address. But no such unread email exists. Has my registry been
corrupted somehow?

My bad....I over looked your mention of Eudora. As per your question, have
a look via the registry. You don't have to do anything, just look over the
entries I mentioned. If need be, export them and send them to me via
private email. Good luck either way!

Hi Paul, this has happened to me before and the way I took care of it was
get into Outlook Express and delete that default piece of mail that you get
when setting up mail server stuff. I had to do this even though I don't use
Outlook Express. You may want to get in there and look at it, even though
you think it's not the problem, just to rule it out.
Hope this helps

Lonnie,
Your post is both very welcome and very interesting. First, I have never
used Outlook Express and have been working on this machine since January
without this happening. Second, the message at log in -- "1 Unread Mail
Message" -- suddenly disappeared this morning without my doing anything at
all. So now the issue has turned into a mystery, instead. The message is
simply no longer there and there is no explanation for why.
I am of course very glad it is gone, but nevertheless feel haunted by 2
questions: (1) What caused it in the first place? and (2) what made it go
away?
Is this a random, temporary anomoly, or a deeply technical issue that is
crystal clear
to someone who knows the code? Personally I would be very interested in
hearing. In the meantime, I have followed your advice, Lonnie, and gone
into Outlook Express (which had NEVER been opened before) and moved that
default piece of mail out of the "In" box "just to rule it out" for the
future.
Any further input from anyone out there that thinks they have the key to
this mystery would be welcomed.

It's not a mystery Paul :) It has happened to me more than once (every time
it has been when having to reinstall my system and then setting up mail
again). At any rate, the dissapearing act happened to me as well, however it
was at a time when I knew what it was and what caused it, so I didn't worry
about deleting it and after a period of time while logging on, it just wasn't
there anymore. I assumed that after a while the system just doesn't treat it
as new mail anymore, at least that was my assumption. If you deleted it,
it shouldn't haunt you anymore :)
