application directory was erased

I have an legacy application that was installed on W2K.
It was still usable after I upgraded the OS to WinXP.
Recently, the application directory was erased.
However, in the Add/Remove Program, it still exists.
I suspects that the application directory was erased by the Windows update
patch applied recently.
Is it possible to recover the associated files?
How to avoid this in the future?
Thanx

Windows Update will NOT erase any applications not directly associated with
the patch. Someone did it accidentally, or you have logical disk corruption.
Run chkdsk to check for the latter.

If you are using the same computer to send your post it is likely already
too late to recover your files. They may have already been written over by
new saves.

Go to Google and search on "file recovery" and visit some of the web sites
mentioned.

Hi Janice,

1. Updates don't remove programs/directories.
2. How does the error message read when you click the entry in Add/Remove?
3. Recover and Restore Deleted Files (Line 36)

When I click the entry in Add/Remove, the
installation support file "-----\setup.inx" counld not be installed.
When I click the Program File -> application, the XP searches the .exe file.
The whole directory couldnt be found by Windows Explorer.

It is normal to still have the application showing in Add/Remove if it was
removed by simply deleting the program directory instead of using
Add/Remove. Check the recycle bin to see if your deleted files are still
there. Your entire application directory may be in the recycle bin. If you
have GoBack you might be able to use it to restore the deleted files.
Failing that you'll probably need to reinstall the basic program and then
restore files you've produced from your backup. (unless you have the
entire directory available from your backup)
