Hope this is the place for my question about activation of XP.

If I have installed and activated Windows Home XP on my system and then build
a new computer, can I use the same XP on that computer, if I have removed it
from my old system? Or am I expected to purchase a new copy all over again?

Thank you

Hi Tom,

If this is a retail version of Windows XP, you will have to remove
Windows XP from the old machine.
Install on the new machine. Activate, if prompted you may need to
place a phone call, but they should allow you to activate if you tell
them you removed Windows XP from the old machine and replaced it with
a new machine. If this is an OEM version then the answer is no.

The official Microsoft answer is if it is a retail version then yes, OEM no.
In the real world it will sometimes activate over the internet, sometimes if
you phone in they will activate it, sometimes if you phone in and talk to a
person they will deny activation.

Yes you can. Provided that you have uninstalled the same copy from your previous machine.

Yes you can use xp on the new system assuming you wont be using the old
system anymore. Might take a call to MS to activate, might not.

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not legitimately
transferable), simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on
and then install it on the new computer. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, the you'll most
likely be able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.
