Partition new harddrive?

I have an XP system new with 80 gb harddrive (preinstalled os). How can I go
about creating some partitions? I am not able to use diskpart because this
is the boot volume. Are there any options besides a 3rd party tool? Thanks.

Only a third-party partitioning program can be used to resize
or create partitions on a drive that currently has Windows XP installed.
Partition Magic 8

Is your 80GB drive currently a single partition? If so, no there
are no options beside a third-party tool (short of reformatting
the drive and starting over).
Unfortunately, no version of Windows provides any way of changing
the partition structure of the drive nondestructively. The only
way to do what you want is with third-party software. Partition
Magic is the best-known such program, but there are
freeware/shareware alternatives. One such program is BootIt Next
Generation. It's shareware, but comes with a free 30-day trial,
so you should be able to do what you want within that 30 days. I
haven't used it myself, but it comes highly recommended by
several other MVPs here.

Thanks for the advice. Kind of frustrating ordering things for the company
and everything comes preinstalled. One giant partition etc. I have the same
issue with a server. 133gb one partition.

The other option is to partition at the time of installation.

We use IBM pc's and when ordering the os and eveything is preinstalled. If
you tamper with the harddrive support won't help in the event of a problem.
Thanks for the help.

NEW IBM PC's? We just got some new ones and their OS is a royal pain.
Their 'Windows keys' do not work with any CD we have of various windows
versions. I tried both XP Pro CDs from single and multi user. One call to
IBM tech support got a moron who sent us a new hard drive. A second call to
tech support got a guy who knew what he was doing. You have to run the
special IBM software that comes pre-installed AND you have to change the
BIOS before and after running it. If you formatted your PC you are SOL. We
had formatted the PC but we had more than one PC so we used another one.
You have to have a PC working with their preloaded software to fix the
formatted PC you want to reload Windows on, because you have to create
disks. Their special stupid software requires 7 blank CDs. They don't give
you any CDs with the new PC. So we managed to recover the one we
reformatted but still did not see a way to create multiple partitions on it.

Yeah that dam protect & recover utility that they have is a joke. There are
like 3 steps to doing it, the first takes about 12 gb of your harddrive,
then the 2nd uses 7 disks, and the third is some type of weekly incremental
backups.
We are actually looking at purchasing the image software Acronis? (Something
like this)
I like the IBM computer but there backup & support is questionable. I hate
to sound prejudice but %85 of the time I call for support whether it's IBM,
Veritas, Phone Systems, I get someone I can't understand.

Some companies will let you specify how you want the drive
partitioned when you place your order, but not all will.

I have 2 drives, a 40Gb and a 60Gb - total 100Gb, none is partitioned, I have
Partition Magic, and have consiigned it to a "used file" of CD's. I use C
drive for programmes and the O/S and D drive for games, My Documents and My
Downloads.
This works fine for me, and if I need to make backups of my data, it's all
there in D, My Documents and My Downloads, the only ones that aren't are
ssome of the game saves - my e-mails are backed up to My Documents!
Hope it helps, regards.
