Is it necessary to have WMP, Music Match, Real One & QuickTime or can I use
just one and remove the others...?

That depends on what kind format you have to play. Each will play most
of the standard formats, but they have their own proprietary formats
that the others will not recognize.

You can remove all except for WMP. It is an integral part of Windows. And no, you do not need them all. They all do some different things than the others. You decide which one you would like to use. Again you cannot remove the WMP unless you like to have issues with Windows

WMP installed by default with win, the others installed by the user, so if
you didnt want them why did you install? Allthough to view certain web
content it may require they be installed

WMP comes with Windows, so it's just there and plays a number of formats.
THE others are optional on Windows. If a format isn't supported by WMP then
you will need another player to play that format, right? These days you can
get by with just WMP although a number of websites only offer only Real
files and many movie trailers are only in Quicktime.

If you want to play the big three then have WMP, Quicktime, and Real.

If you want to minimize just have WMP.

What I did for my brother, because he wanted Real and Quicktime, was that I
installed them for him and then made WMP the default for all the formats it
supports and turned off notification in Quicktime and Real. I also locked
down Quicktime and Real so they are not always running off to the web to
phone home and be grabbing useless content. Real even wants you to email
with their bloody player .. geesh. I turned that off in a hurry. If you
study the settings of these players you find that there is a lot of excess
you can turn off.

Downside of removing the other players is the loss of the ability to play
the proprietary file types they support (.ra, .mov, etc.).

WMP and QuickTime should cover most formats, unless you got plenty of native
formats for all players you have.

I personally use two different media players,

the first being WMP 9.0 (havenít bothered to upgrade to 10 yet)

and TCMP *The Core Media Player*

TCMP is what I use for .OGGs, .MKVs, and almost all non-AVI files.
