"Cannot copy "filename": Invalid MS-DOS function."

I have a very large file to copy from one hard drive to another hard
drive on the same machine.
OS is Windows Server 2003 standard
Not copying to or from a CD or DVD or CDI... just HD to HD.
The file follows the 8.3 DOS naming convention (actually it's 4.3)
Server's patches are up to date.
Fresh install of the OS. No fragmented drives. Plenty of free space.
File to be copied is just over 50GB.

Appears to copy for 10 or 20 minutes and then I get an error message:
The pop up window subject "Error Copying File or Folder"
The error message "Cannot copy priv.edb: Invalid MS-DOS function."

All of the google searches I'm finding talk about copying to or from CD
or DVD drives or copying VCD or AVI or MP3's.
None of that applies here.
This is just a simple hard drive to hard drive copy.
I've tried copying to 3 different drives on this system with the same
outcome.
I've even tried to copy to an external USB hard drive but the problem
is the same.

Any help would be appreciated:)
Thanks in advance to all you geeks who have nothing better to do than
listen to my problems...

Your target drive might be a FAT32 partition, with a maximum file
size of 4 GBytes.

Also: How exactly do you copy the file? From Explorer? From a
Command Prompt? If it's a Command Prompt, how did you start
it? With cmd.exe? With command.com?
