cannot find MULTIMEDIA icon in Windows XP

recently my system with Windows XP Svc Pack 2 stopped playing Windows
sounds (startup, sign off, asterisk, etc.). When I went to the
troubleshooter function for no sounds the instructions said to access
the MULTIMEDIA icon in Windows Control Panel. I went to Windows
Control Panel, but alas, no MULTIMEDIA icon was to be found.

How do I find it, OR, how do I re-install it?

best, Aaron

Aaron, go back to Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices
Icon>Sound>Sound Scheme>Make sure Windows Default is selected. Click on
Apply, Ok.
